Due to the geographical location and the pedoclimatic diversity, the overall Algerian biodiversity (natural and agricultural) has about 16,000 species. Of these species, 226 species are threatened with extinction and benefit from legal protection.
3,139 plant species have been identified in Algeria, with 35% of them being Mediterranean in origin, followed by Euro-Mediterranean (12%) and North African (11%) species. 700 of these plant species are endemic.
Known marine biological diversity amounts to 3,183 species. The known faunistic population totals 4,963 taxa including a thousand vertebrates. This last category is represented in particular by the following classes: Birds (386), Fish (300), Mammals (108), and Reptiles (70).
