The geographic position of mainland France, between land and sea, has given it a highly diverse natural heritage. Mainland France has among the greatest diversity of amphibians, birds and mammals in Europe. It is home to 40% of the species of flora found in Europe and over 50% of the natural habitat types of community interest.
Of the world’s 34 designated biodiversity hotspots, five land hotspots and two marine hotspots are in France. The oldest established National Park in France dates back to 1963, Parc national de la Vanoise. The French maritime domain covers 11 million square kilometres, making it the second largest in the world.
France counts today more than 5 500 protected areas and has succeeded in protecting more than 33% of its marine habitats, and 32% of its land, in Continental and Overseas territories.
