Hoy, Galápagos se une al grupo de áreas que han iniciado su proceso de certificación para ser parte de la Lista Verde de la UICN, una certificación que premia la gestión eficaz de las áreas protegidas y conservadas del mundo.

Quito, Ecuador. – Hoy, el Parque Nacional Galápagos inicia su camino hacia la certificación de la Lista Verde de la UICN. El Parque Nacional Galápagos abarca aproximadamente 7.970 kilómetros cuadrados, lo que corresponde únicamente a su parte terrestre. La belleza natural de las islas, la diversidad y singularidad de especies que alberga, su origen volcánico, su dinámica geológica con permanentes cambios y variedad de formaciones; el ser considerado un laboratorio vivo de procesos evolutivos aún en marcha, sumado a que dio cabida para el desarrollo de un gran número de especies tanto animales como vegetales que no existen en ningún otro lugar del mundo, convierten a Galápagos en un sitio muy único y de importancia mundial para la herencia común de la humanidad.

Esta importante área inicia uno de los procesos de certificación más importantes para formar parte de la Lista Verde de la UICN. La Lista Verde de Áreas Protegidas de la UICN es un estándar global que busca mejorar el desempeño de las áreas protegidas y conservadas, y promover la conservación de la naturaleza, y de los beneficios que de ésta obtienen las personas, articulándose con la misión de la UICN, relacionada con fomentar un mundo justo que valora y conserva la naturaleza. El Estándar Lista Verde tiene como objetivo lograr la conservación exitosa de espacios dedicados a la preservación de la biodiversidad, así como objetivos sociales, económicos y culturales. El Estándar busca ser un sinónimo de éxito en el manejo eficiente de las Áreas Protegidas; el cual se consigue a través del cumplimiento de una serie de criterios sólidos a nivel global; mismos que se relacionan con una ejemplar gobernanza, diseño, planificación y gestión de estos espacios.

Esta decisión por parte de Ecuador demuestra la voluntad y el compromiso del Ministerio del Ambiente, Agua y Transición Ecológica con el constante fortalecimiento de sus áreas, pues, buscar la certificación, supone un reto importante que conlleva ser parte de una prestigiosa lista de áreas con altos estándares de gestión y manejo.
